An online qualifier, or satellite, is a smaller tournament in which the prize is entry into larger online tournaments, or major offline events – like the World Poker Tour championships in Las Vegas.
The advantage of satellite tournaments is that they are inexpensive to enter compared to the larger multi-table tournaments. For example, buy-in for a multi-table tournament could be $220, whereas entry into a satellite tournament could cost as little as $22. All you have to do then is win your seat at the multi-table tournament!
